lowering CPU impact on dropping multicast packets

Hi group,

Imagine the following scenario. A low speed customer (2Mbps for example)
joins a high rate multicast stream say 5Mbps. On the provider router the
excess of packets will be dropped. I presume this is done by the CPU. If
this happens a lot the provider router will suffer. Is there a way to drop
the packets without interfering the CPU?

I presume the 'ip multicast rate-limit' will also require CPU attention.

'no ip mroute-cache' causes mcast packets to be switched in hardware over
interfaces, this has imho nothing to do with it.

thanks,

Koen
