RE: Dynagen For Total Rack Replacement

It's always a possibility, but when you start looking at things like support
or feature sets, you run into some issues that real equipment always wins!

By the time you find a nice souped-up server with LOTS of memory and a bunch
of network cards and hook it up to your switches... Oh yea, and spend all
the time figuring out how to bind everything the way it's supposed to go!
Then you may very well be at the same price point as building out the lab
with real equipment.

Honestly, the switches are the most expensive piece of the lab these days.
With the connections being reduced to simply serial lines and ethernet (e.g.
no ISDN, no ATM) then routers are more a commodity. You can find 2600XMs or
other devices very inexpensive that support almost everything feature-wise.
And then some well-planned rack rental can solve the other problems.

But, on the other hand, for some testing (perhaps not FULL labs), being able
to run this from your laptop while on an airplne is pretty slick!

I guess time will tell where the migration goes to, but most likely you'll
want to have a mix of both real and simulated things going on. And
certainly don't forget the triggered studying (rack rental) for things you
don't feel like spending the money to purchase!

My two cents,

PS. I'm evaluating a Dynamips setup for some of the IPexpert labs as well,
and looking to tag things as "supported" or "not supported" throughout the
labs.

Subject: Dynagen For Total Rack Replacement

Good Morning Group,
I have seen more and more interest in
Dynagen.
I have really asked myself if this product could be used for a total
solution for any CCIE R&S preparation. I, like many of you, have invested a
large amount of money in hardware for our studies which ends up depreciating
in value as time goes by. I have actually thought of selling all my routers
and replacing them with Dynagen. I would keep the switches and port Dynagen
to multiple network cards hanging off a Dynagen box to physical switches.
With products like this, can anyone really foresee the need to operate
expensive hardware at home ? Just interested anyone's thoughts on this.

Cheers

John
