RE: Load Balancing with MPLS

Umar,

My response presumes your talking about >1 cct into MPLS from one router, or
several CE routers in the same AS, each with 1 or more ccts into MPLS.

My answers are based on using BGP as the routing protocol in operation
between CE and PE.

For inbound traffic to a CE from MPLS, use MEDs to best-effort load-share
based on destination prefixes.

For outbound traffic from the CE into MPLS, use local-preference to ensure
traffic destined to certain prefixes uses a particular circuit (to achieve a
form of load balancing).

You can achieve the above using inbound and outbound neighbour route-maps,
in conjunction with access-lists or prefix-lists to define the network
ranges you wish to tweak traffic behaviour for.

More starting info here:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/bgp.htm

If you don't use BGP, or don't have routing control, you could use GLBP
(gateway load balancing protocol) on the CE site to split traffic, however
this requires 2 or more CE routers.

The service provider should also be able to configure certain prefixes for a
site as best suited to a particular circuit on the PE configuration.

None of the above approaches guarentee a 50:50 or 33/33/33 etc traffic split
(depending on number of circuits) like MLPPP or FRF.16 do, but these
technologies may not be offered by your MPLS provider.

Basically... lots of options :)

Good luck!

Hi Guys,

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong venue to pose question about
MPLS, however feel is also a platform to exchange and share knowledge,
industrial experience about technology.

Just want to know if anyone had dome some work on MPLS load balacing
and is prepared to share the experince.

I after information or good documentation or pointers how best to do it.

Thanks in advance

Umar
