Asunto: Rate-limit command and Police

Does anyone have a good resource that explains the rate-limit command? I am
getting confused all of the sudden.

1. If something states to limit traffic to 500kbps. My first assumption is
to do a rate-limit output 500000 2000 2000 (blah... blah...) So I thought
that is put the average rate to 500000 it was just limit it to that, but
after reading further the Bc lets the traffic somewhat exceed the average
and the Be is lets all traffic exceed the limit.

Guh... I just started to understand FTS... I am think some of the confusion
maybe with getting the two confused.

Does anyone have a good formula for this? Or a good link?

2. Along the same line... if I decided to limit traffic by using a
policy-map... I could match the traffic with the class-map... and then under
the policy-map-c I now have 3 options.

Police (and I can just specify the rate-limit of 500000, but is seems that
it will go over the 500000, because it sets the Bc automatically to
something like 16000)

Police CIR (which once again I can set it to 500000, but it seems to do the
same as just "Police")

Police rate (which I have not messed with)

What are the differences? All I can find is one liners... but not what
situation what would you use one or the other.

Anything you all can help with would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
