That would be the way to do that, by specifying the irdp on both
redundant interfaces and using the preference to add priority. It works
great. Lab it up with a router set up as a client (no ip routing).
Don't forget to specify "ip gdp irdp" on this router/ws. HTH.

Oh,
I didn't pay attention you can even specify an IP address...that's cool
so that you can easily support a mixed environment with hosts that have
their default gateway statically assigned, and hence require
HSRP/VRRP/GLBP for redundancy, and hosts that can learn it dynamically.
I'm assuming in this case the advertised address should be the virtual
address on both routers.

Unfortunately I see there is no way to bind the generation of RDP
messages with the HSRP/VRRP state. That would have been even cooler, so
that only the Active router would have generated these messages, as it
is hosts receive these periodic messages twice (one from each router).
I wonder if that can create an issue since the host may receive another
advertisement before the minadvertinterval has elapsed (it'll receive it
from the other router but I won't be able to realize that).

Sabrina -

That should be enough to configure it. However, it is probably best to
change the max and min advertisement interval so you can get the
advertisement to send out quicker than the default which is fairly long.
One other point, you probably want to advertise a preference....an
interface preference for your router, or, and ip address (if running
HSRP/VRRP/GLBP)....

 - ip irdp preference <preference number>
 - ip irdp ip address x.x.x.x <preference number>

According to the documentation, the lower number is more preferred.
However, when using this with some IOS routers....this is reversed for
some odd reason.

Hi,
I'm trying to learn how to configure IRDP.
According to Cisco documentation I only need to cfg :

 ip irdp

 in interface cfg mode.
Is that enough? Do I need to configure any of the following?

holdtime how long a receiver should believe the information
   maxadvertinterval maximum time between advertisements
   minadvertinterval minimum time between advertisements
