It all depends on the individual... Some people run the gauntlet and get
all the certs along the way, as it does provide a roadmap, and each cert
gained along the way serves as a landmark to their progress. Others, either
because of their work experience, or other drivers, are able to proceed
directly to completing the CCIE.

Regardless, even though achieving the CCIE is a great accomplishment, a
networking expert it does not make. The protocol developers are the real
experts... I wonder how many people on the IETF board actually have the
CCIE, or if they did at one point, continue to keep it active?
