Ah ha! That was indeed the problem! I was running 12.2.25SEB2 - upgraded
the IOS and voila, it worked a charm. Thanks for your help on this.

As annoying as it was at the time, it really forced me to go back and
validate my understanding of auto-rp. I wonder if Cisco introduces
little anomalies like this as part of their commitment to "on-going
education" :) It certainly helped me!

What version of code are you running on the 3750. I opened up a TAC
case on
a very similar issue last year, requiring 12.2.25SEC (IIRC).
