AFAIK, voice vlan is a cisco hack to let the phone know out of band
(CDP) what vlan to tag voice traffic into.
Cisco usually mixes many ingredients to get a service running. That way,
among other things, you get the value of a pure cisco solution...

Also, the way phone trunks are brought up has changed along the time. It
is now the case that an access port will turn into 2 vlan trunk if a
phone is discovered there. It was not always like that, if I remember well.

So this particular case does not only involve "plain RFC" trunks, but
cisco way of dealing with QOS for IP telephony.
