3550 "system mtu" versus VLAN mtu

Question:

The default system mtu on my 3550's 1500. My topology
is like this:

R1-----CAT1-----CAT2------R2

R1->CAT1 is a trunk with VLAN 50

CAT1->CAT2 is trunking VLAN 50

CAT2->R2 is a trunk with VLAN 50

I configure the following command on both CAT's:

vlan 50
 mtu 1498

"show vlan id 50" confirms the command was applied to
the CAT's.

However, when I ping R1 to R2, a 1500 byte frame w/ DF
bit set still passes. What is this vlan mtu command
really doing. The docs don't really cover it. Any
comments?
