Scott,
I would contend that you, the Brian's, and the NMC folks and of course many
others not named for brevity are in the upper echelon of instructors.
I use to sit through courses upon courses before bringing them into various
organizations I have worked with, and to say the least most Cisco Training
partners cannot come close to the aforementioned group. Quite frankly, my
dog knows more about internetworking than a great deal of instructors I have
dealt with in the past, that is because she is my audience when I hit the
white board in my ex-dining room while studying.
My point is that most instructors do nothing more than read from slides,
provide minimal insight, and have a minimum understanding of the course
material.
I exclude most CCIE instructors from the bad list, mostly because of the
"seeking of knowledge and understanding" that it takes to become a CCIE,
thus having an elevated level of understanding of technologies and being
able to bridge the gap for those of us that are still learning to achieve
the CCIE baseline, as I like to call it. I truly do not believe some are
smarter than others, I do believe that some have more honed skills at
deducing things, and bringing value to the topic of instruction, be it
internetworking technologies, or driving a car. Instruction is a gift that
most will never have, at least in great successes.
It is very true that most of the methodology is common sense, but it is an
application of common sense applied to internetworking. Usually when a
person sees or hears something that clicks, or illuminates that 'light bulb'
it is because it was so simple the answer was in front of them the whole
time, common sense.
I sincerely thank those of you that have achieved your CCIE success and
still hang around this forum. As it is with a great many things in life,
those who have walked the path before know a great deal more about the path
than those that haven't walked it. So when you folks bind an explanation of
a technology with something we can relate to, or just simply break things
down in simple details, it makes a great difference. A
Thanks Again!
Wayne

Certainly not to take anything away from Bruce 'n' company, but the
methodology as you point out is very common-sense oriented. Any of us who
teach classes discuss mostly the same things. We all have different terms
for it (you know, we don't like to violate each other's trademarks!) but all
the processes are very close.
Anyone individually should be able to figure these things out (hence the
idea of COMMON-sense), although it usually sticks with us better when
someone else points it out! I guess that's the human nature coming in!
But besides the obvious things you mention looking at a testing method and
covering the topics, the choices typically come down to instructor's
abilities. It's one thing to stand up and spout off information (kinda like
a Doc-CD Book on Tape!), but it's a whole other thing to be able to relay
concepts in a manner that makes sense to people and be able to explain any
minute detail based on questions asked.
Every person thinks differently. And that includes instructors. It's the
adaptability that makes or breaks things. Teaching a methodology and what
you should be thinking during an exam is merely a small part of this
exchange. Enjoy those moments, and hope they come frequently!

I would agree,
been to NMC1 once and NMC2 twice...each time I came away with a healthy
respect for the instructors and the material. If your going to spend money
on a class you really cant go wrong here. It's a pretty good value,
especially seeing as they have a very good instructor to student ratio (3
instructors to 7 students last time I was there)
Their methodology is very sound and common sense, if you cant reach the
golden moment and quickly your chances of passing the exam are not very
good. take a look at their tech library, it's a good deal for what you get.
