I know the members of this group are always searching for
cost-effective methods to prepare for the CCIE lab. As I know not
everyone has the ability to travel to a class (based on either
cost/distance/time), I felt that I should share my experience with some
of the products available on the market today.
Recently, I have taken both the CCIE Assessor pre-test and a
NetMasterClass Check-IT graded lab. Both are tools used to prepare a
candidate for the actual experience of the CCIE lab. While the Assessor
lab was adequate, in terms of actual learning, the Check-IT lab was far
superior. The sheer breadth of knowledge required to pass a CheckIT lab
is daunting, but having the ability to attempt the lab, then receive a
detailed report on where a candidate may or may not have fallen short is
a wonderful teaching tool. The score report for the CheckIT provides
specific information about the tasks at hand, points out where the
student's configuration may have been inadequate, and links to a showIT
tool where one can peruse both one's specific configuration and the
differences between that and the desired configuration. Again, there is
an amazing potential for personal growth here. While I would never
personally espouse using a lab scenario to create configurations for a
production environment, I have learned much that has helped me to
optimize the network that I help manage. I would strongly suggest
candidates take a look into these products to evaluate where they stand
and avoid the time, expense, and frustration of possibly failing the
lab.
As always, the opinions expressed here are my own, and not reflective of
that of my employer. If anyone has any other questions that I can answer
without violating the respective NDA's, please feel free to contact me.
