If it's any consolation for you, newer versions of IOS make that part of the
default configuration in BGP! ;)

Just finished a lab with the same scenario and I didn't notice i was running
12.0 on one of the routers....which by default has synchonization
on.....turned it off and all was fine..there went 20 minutes I can never
regain but, when i see that again i'll never forget :o)
