I think it has more to do with the motivation level of the person in
question. I am an SE with a Cisco partner and used to work for AT&T in a
presales role. In that life I had customers ask me frequently if something
would work and I would in turn take the concept to my own equipment and
trial it. That way I had something real to tell customers as well as stayed
current on my own skills.
