There is som formulas in 802.1D standart. It's state max-age and hello timers
calculate. As far as i know you must use
spann vlan XXX root { pri | sec } diameter _diameter_
where _diameter_ - maximum number of switches that traffic will traverse
across L2 network.
This command adjust timers with agree 802.1D standart.
