Most search engines will have some support for various
special characters.
+ and - are usually interpreted as boolean AND and
NOT.

Individual search engines may have additional options.
For example, with google, you can add on things like:

filetype:pdf (will return results that are PDFs)

domain:groupstudy.com (will return results from the
groupstudy domain)

With google, you can use the ~ character as a "like"
character, and results will return for the item or
synonyms.
~ATM will return results for ATM, Mastercard, Visa,
etc.

For more fun search engine stuff, check out the
O'Reilly book titled "Google Hacks".
