Good morning:
There is a way to allow for a 2600 series router accept a 12.3 image. The
answer is rommon.
Start the router and use the break key to stop loading the flash image and
start rommon
System Bootstrap, Version 11.3(2)XA4, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

monitor: command "boot" aborted due to user interrupt
rommon 1 >
Use this command for disaster recovery only to recover an image via TFTP.
Monitor variables are used to set up parameters for the transfer. (Syntax:
"VARIABLE_NAME=value" and use "set" to show current variables.) "ctrl-c" or
"break" stops the transfer before flash erase begins.
The following variables are REQUIRED to be set for tftpdnld:
IP_ADDRESS= The IP address for this unit
IP_SUBNET_MASK= The subnet mask for this unit
DEFAULT_GATEWAY= The default gateway for this unit
TFTP_SERVER= The IP address of the server to fetch from
TFTP_FILE= The filename to fetch
Command line options:
tftpdnld -r
-r: do not write flash, load to DRAM only and launch image
That will allow you to have a 12.3 image that supports IPv6 OSPFv3. Cheap
and easy. Once the TFTPDNLD commands are in the router the router will
always load the same way from the same source when you use the tftpdnld -r
command.
This is also not a bad design for routers that you are upgrading the IOS
image and the flash flicks out and won't allow you to load an IOS image. I
know because it has happened a number of times, (bad flash on image upgrade,
flash that caught on fire, fun, fun, fun). With the tftpdnld -r command I
was able to return the router to service and order the flash to finish the
IOS upgrade.
The bulk of the IOS image flash size in the newer routers is to support IP
PBX services like Call Manage Express, etc. So expect to see the older
designs continue to fall by the wayside for services other than IPv4 and T-1
service continue to grow.
