Here is a reply to a question regarding the IOS versions for Jan
2006 from a proctor on Cisco's "Ask the expert - CCIE Routing and
Switching Forum":

I'm not sure the point of the 3800 is just to use new equipment, I
think it
is meant to get you some time on 12.4.x code I imagine you can find
something
else that you can run the 12.4.x code on and use that..
