When to attend a bootcamp?

How do you know when you're ready to attend a bootcamp, bearing in mind
you have to book them several months in advance?

For example if my lab is booked for April next year, when's the best time
to go, a month before or longer? Also do most of you find it best to
leave a couple of weeks between the bootcamp and sitting the lab exam to
iron out some issues or just go to the lab soon after so it's all fresh in
your mind.

I know this is probably different for each person, but a general consensus
would be good.

Thanks.
