Interesting thread. Putting aside the CsC discussion there rae a number of
issues I would recommend one consider when buying an MPLS VPN service from a
provider. Strating with the following:
If you implement QoS on your network, how is that going to map to the
service provider QoS offering? Normally providers require marking of a given
type for admission to priority, or high priority data classes. Does this
match your internal marking scheme? If not how are you going to map them
together?
Regarding routing metrics, will they be transported transparently through
the provider network? If you are using BGP between CE and PE, are you OK
with internal routes originated in say site 1, appearing as external routes
in say site 2? Will that cause any issues during transition from the legacy
to new network? Other CE to PE routihng protocols have other issues.
How are you going to handle multicast between sites? MPLS VPNs typically
only support unicast. Are you going to do a GRE tunnel overlay, or is your
provider going to offer mVPN (not many do today).
I hate to make a shameless plug, but after working with Cisco's internal IT
department to convert Cisco's WAN from a frame network to a provider
delivered MPLS VPN, we unearthed lots of issues to think about and wrote it
all down in a book called "Selecting MPLS VPN services" by Cisco Press,
available soon after the holidays.
