I think it's much more fun if you don't have the correct kit. It
challenges you to think about it in a differnt way.

I never had the correct kit. I used a few 1700's , 2600's etc. I also
used a 3750 as 2 backbone routers in most of my labs. Seemed to do the
trick !!
