The 3550 has 2 gbic ports. I may be wrong(no surprise here), but
excluding the speed, FE and GE should be pretty much the same thing.

Prolly you can use a copper gbic, or a nm-whatever that supports fiber
(if such thing exists, too lazy to google it)

Just use a router capable of running 12.4 code and you'll be fine. IE
is not using the GE ports at this time so until the lab changes the
3550's to a switch that is 10/100/1000 there is no need to go with
anything else. A 2600xm or a 3640 will do. Like Brian mentioned, you
can go with a 2800 with or without 10/100/1000. If you were going to
buy a new 2800 I would go with the 10/100/1000 option just to prepare
for any lab changes that we could be suprised with!
