If you configured IP addresses on the tunnel interface you would not need an
mroute. The thinking is that if say each end is addressed as follows:

10.1.1.1/24 on R1 and 10.1.1.4/24,

The 10.1.1.0 subnet is a connected network, so when the ping from R4 comes
over the tunnel, it is sourced from 10.1.1.4, arriving on the tunnel
interface, which coincides with the interface the router will use to reply,
so no RPF check fails.
