RE: Sparse-dense-mode in Auto-RP question?

If you are running dense mode, then you don't need an RP, so AutoRP and a MA
are irrelevant anyway...

I think it's just a processing thing, but I could be wrong on that. The job
that an MA does, while it uses dense mode, it's job itself (the only thing
you are using the loopback interface for anyway) is to really deal with
sparse-mode information. So it seems like a "who cares" issue in my
opinion. However, Mr. Doyle has been around a little longer than I have and
may have some insight on the programming and/or router-based functionality
that I'm not seeing.

The election process itself though will not be changed by putting your
loopback in sparse-mode or sparse-dense-mode because that part of the
processing has nothing to do with the election itself.

HTH,

Scott

Subject: Sparse-dense-mode in Auto-RP question?

Hi: What are the effects of configuring the lo0 of the mapping agent in an
Auto-RP environment in sparse-dense-mode? Doyle's Vol. II on page 560 states
that the loopback 0 intf. of the mapping agent "never must make any
sparse/dense determinations - meaning that the lo0 must only be in
sparse-mode. I tried with both and am not seeing any difference as far as ro
mappings go on the other routers. Is there anything else I can try to check
to see what breaks etc. Or anyone with a good explanation for the above?
Thank you. Mapping Agent output:Homburg-R4#sh ip pim rp mapping PIM
