What led you to that conclusion? What show output were you looking at to indicate that?
It's certainly possible that if you were looking at the OSPF state, that would indeed show point-to-point, but that is not telling you whether the interface itself is p2p or not. If you associate a virtual template with a DLCI on a p2p interface, you will still not be able to ping the local interface, which is indicative of multipoint behavior.

Yes, the properties of the VT are copied (cloned) to the virtual-access
for communication. However the main difference IMHO is that the
virtual-template creates a multipoint interface, whereas teh dailer is a
point to point interface, enabling the dialer interface to ping itself.
