Prefix list Vs Standard ACL while redistributing..

Hi Folks,

          While redistributing into OSPF, I am trying to tag some
routes matching with Prefix list in a route-map and setting metric
type - 1, This does not work. However, if i use a standard ACL to
match the prefixes, it works perfectly. Did anyone observe the same
thing?

So I am confused, when to use to what. I heard we must use prefix
lists whereever it is possible...? But in the above case, prefix list
just does not work. So want to know if there is any thumbrule, for
deciding this?

I know with BGP, prefix lists is a must use, but how about in IGP?

Thoughts?
