Hi Kayode,
This question (is there a way to disable VTP?) got banged around pretty
heavily this Spring/Summer on GS. Check the archives to understand the
different view points. It all came down to what does 'disable' mean (and on
which version of VTP).
Short answer: - vtp transparent mode using version 1.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12225sec/3550scg/swvtp.htm#wp1035326
When you configure the switch for VTP transparent mode, VTP is disabled on
the switch. The switch does not send VTP updates and does not act on VTP
updates received from other switches. However, a VTP transparent switch
running VTP version 2 does forward received VTP advertisements on its trunk
links.
So, if you're asking how to block VTP while using version 2 (as the original
post on this thread was focused on version 2), then 'vtp transparent mode'
isn't the answer. Some GS participants went through an elaborate
configuration of trying to block VTP packets. If using version 1 (or
version 3), different answer.
HTH, Sean
