Since its tradition to write about the journey to CCIE
I thought I better pen something.
I started looking to do my CCIE in 2002 and I actually
sat one attempt under the old 2 day format. I didnt
manage to get past day one. Then I feel seriously ill
and took 2+ years to get back to some sense of
normaility still getting over it today. I moved jobs from
working in a Gold Partner 12 hours a day doing support
for a mix of contract customers and managed customers
this honed my troubleshooting skills no ends to working for
a large corporate with more normal hours
Took my first attempt under the new format around a year
ago and the last attempt this week.
As for study material I can say I have gone through lots of
its. For me I think the winning combination was:
1. Internetwork Expert online classes
I used the recorded one rather than the live one
due to not being able to get the time off to do it
live. It is a very very good course and being able
to listen to it live or early in the mornings in work
was a real bonus. The Brians explain the topics very
well. Also they stress again and again how important
it is to understand the topics and also to go over
the Cisco DOC CD it really is a wonderful resource.
2. Netmaster Class Checkit Labs
I did 5 mock exams in total it nearly killed me I can
tell you. The material is harder than the lab and I would
say longer. However the best thing for me was getting
the feedback report and then being able to use the
online tool to do "show xyz" on my configs verus the
master config it was like having access to two sets of
routers. It showed me how important attention to detail
is when you are chasing for 80 marks.
On a personal note I have no idea now what to do with
all this time !. I guess I better take a break and start
studying for the service provider exam (mad I know ).
Regards
Kevin
