I do not see anything that would prevent you from doing that.
The map-list/map-group command allow you to map the atm layer 2 information
to layer 3 information of the remote atm device/router.
Remember that, you still have to define your layer 2 information under the
atm interface, and that is where the virtual template/ppp will come in.
eg:
map-list atm1
ip 1.1.1.1 atm-vc 1 broadcast
!
interface virtual-template1
ip address 1.1.1.2 255.0.0.0
ppp authentication pap
ppp pap sent-username nnnn password xxxx
!
interface atm1/0
no ip address
map-group atm1
atm pvc 1 1 201 aal5ciscoppp virtual-template1
