That's right. Like in the lab I am doing today there is OSPF over a hub
and spoke running non-broadcast. So OSPF would install host routes for
the spokes but the hop would point to that spoke which means you need a
map for it.
Are there any sure fire rules to pre-empt this before configuring? I
usually configure it with the minimum config and then see what doesn't
work.

I wld say depends on the layer 3 routing protoicol for example the mode
of OSPF you configure..
