Not without looking at your config, or seeing the exact command you used to
place your test call!
I can guess at a few things, but it would be kinda silly without the context
of your configs.

I remember in a lab gone by, that each time I tried to make a test call on
the ISDN circuit both circuits came up. I thought at first that this was
because I was dialling myself, so I changed numbers and it still occurred.
I had minimal config on the BRI0's and was not using spids (europe, you know
we don't use them). Any ideas why this should have happened???

Actually, that all depends on whether your ISDN switch/simulator supports
rollover (hunting) or not. If it does not support it, in the 'debug isdn
q931' you'll see a User Busy error. That means you'll need a second dialer
map going to the second number.
If you don't see that, it supports rollover and life is good. :)
By the way, if you want both channels to work, and you are required to use
SPIDs then you do indeed need both. The SPID will activate a channel on the
switch. No SPID, no TEI. No TEI, no phone calls.

You are correct.
My understanding is that if you want ISDN to try both dialing strings you
have to have each SPID mapped.
