Start looking at least 2600XM if you don't want to have problems with IOS file images. The older 2600 series routers do have support in 12.3 code but with limited feature set availability. The highest feature set is Enterprise Basic for the older 2600 series routers. You are going to have to check the feature navigator carefully to make sure you get all the supported features that are going to be needed for the CCIE Lab next year.

Suggest using your older 2500/2600 series routers are backbone routers, frame relay router and/or Access Server for your rack.

Start looking at 2600XM routers or even possibly the newer 2800 series since they are running about the same price.
