NTP and clock calendar-valid ?

From the docs it says the following about the command:

"Some platforms have a hardware clock that is separate from the software
clock. The hardware clock runs continuously, even if the router is powered
off or rebooted. If no outside time source is available on your network, use
this command to make the hardware clock an authoritative time source."

Server
R4#sh run | i ntp
ntp master 2

My test boxes do not have a hardware clock so I am guessing NTP must allow
it to
be a valid time source so the command is not valid for non hardware clock
platforms ?

Thanks & Regards
Kevin
