Being someone that <cough> took five times, I will offer my perspective...
Except for the very gifted few (less than 10% I would way), I don't think
anyone is really ready for their first attempt. There are so many
variables, as well as being in the testing environment for the first time,
that mitigate against that.
My own second attempt was just being unprepared---I did not fully understand
part of the technology and it cost me big time. I nearly quit at this
point... I waited about 10 months between attempts two and three...
My third attempt was better, I actually completed the whole exam and had
time to double check but still did not pass. In my opinion this was the
first time I was really ready... This time I took the exam in the April
timeframe, much sooner than the last...
Attempt #4 I had done a lot more hands on and took the test in late July
because the IOS version was about to be changed. Close but no banana, I
wasnt as frustrated as before because I knew what I was doing and felt I had
a good grasp of everything...
Attempt #5 was in December, I wanted to give it one more shot before IPv6.
In an unrelated story, I separated in September and spent about every waking
hour doing nothing but lab scenarios. I had my strategy perfected by this
point and just wanted to test myself on as much as possible. I obtained a
copy of Netmaster's DoIT labe and really felt ultra-challenged. I got
halfway thrrough the book by the time I took the test...

Subject: Three Test Minimum?
