RE: uplink fast or backbone fast

It's all to do with your switched network topology.

Uplink fast detects direct link failures between in access switches going to switches in the core/distribution layer. It can also be extended to run over a stack of switches using the cross-stack-uplinkfast feature. In all cases the stack or switch is dual-linked to the core/distribution layer switch. The accelerated convergence times of uplinkfast can be around 2-3 seconds - a huge improvement on the STP default.

Backbone fast will attempt to identify INDIRECT link failures within the core layer of your switched network, and place alternative links into the forwarding state at an accelerated rate rather than waiting for the full convergence of spanning-tree. The conditions under which backbone fast will come into effect are very specific - check CCO for further info.

Subject: uplink fast or backbone fast

Dear All,

I want to know when can I use the spanning-tree uplink fast command and
when I can use the spanning-tree backbonefast command because I am
confused about the two command and don't know when to use either.

Best regards,
