Yep this is all good advice however if the phone is running a SIP load then
**# is not enough to unlock the config. It will require the password which
was set on the phone at the time of upgrade or last config download.

Remember, there are certain fields that CAN NOT be changed within the
IP phone. What exactly are you trying to configure? On the 7960, in
settings, scroll down to something like the DHCP config, its either yes
or no, hit the **# and change the field to test it. If it allows you to
change it, then you know that you can unlock it and get into the phone.
If you are not allowed to change another field, it may be something that
is unconfigurable.

There is also a true factory default reset.
Hold down the * key and reset the power (either inline by removing the
ethernet cable or via the external power supply).
This will truly wipe out any existing configuration in the 7960 phone.
