it is always best to just put the command in, no bgp, no split horizon, or bgp sync, split....
Never try to rely on the defaults, you get use to them, then if there is a change and they are running an IOS OR they have pre-set a change to the default, you are screwed and in a rat hole trying to figure out what the hell is going on. ALWAYS put the command in, it takes 5 seconds off your time, but well worth it.

Marcus,
Isn't "no bgp synchronization" enabled by default now on routers with 12.2T. On 3550's, I believe it's still disabled.
Rack1R2(config)#router bgp 100
Rack1R2(config-router)#do sho run | b bgp
router bgp 100
no synchronization
bgp log-neighbor-changes
no auto-summary
Rack1SW2(config)#ip routing
Rack1SW2(config)#router bgp 100
Rack1SW2(config-router)#do sho run | b bgp
router bgp 100
bgp log-neighbor-changes
Rack1SW2(config-router)#no synchronization
Rack1SW2(config-router)#do sho run | b bgp
router bgp 100
no synchronization
bgp log-neighbor-changes
