I believe it's not a "rather than" issue... You need both. You need the
tech focus since the actual exam assumes you do know the core technologies
in a fairly deep way. You need to do the 8 hour labs to practice keeping
your concentration up, get good at managing your time, and learn to deal
with technology interactions. The exam is almost as much about strategy and
mental toughness as it is about technical knowledge.
The way I used was to do quite a few full-day labs, but initially take
several days to do one, stopping to study and deepen my understanding when
I realised I was weak in an area. For instance, the first lab I had with
multicast in it, I did a side-trip that lasted several days before I picked
up the lab again. Read and made up some scenarios, etc...
