I presume you are aware of the document
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios122/122newft/122t/122t13/ftipevdp.htm

you have to remember that dampening is completely linked to time.

In as brief as I can ..

When a link flaps, it creates a penalty of 1000 (default value)
If is exceeds the 'supress-threshold' WITHIN its 'half-life period' then the link is 'dampened'
every half life the penalty is reduced by half, if the penalty is less than the re-use threshold
then the link is 'unsupressed'

If the 'maximum supress time' is exceeded the link unsupressed.

So

>> For example I want interface to be in dampening state after 5 flap.
we shall add 'within a minute' to that !

Then

int fast 0/0
dampening 60 3000 4999 240
(Half-life 60, Reuse Threshold 3000, Supress-Threshold 4999, Maximum Suppress time 240)
So if it flaps 5 times within 60 seconds, then its penalty will be 5000, which is greater than 4999 and the link is supressed, if there is no more flaps, another hlaf life goes by and the penalty is reduced by half to now 2500, so the link is now under the 3000 'reuse threshold' and the link is unsupressed

Regards

James

HI

Is it possible with the interface dampening command to assign a penalty value for a interface flap. For example I want interface to be in dampening state after 5 flap.

Thanks

Haf
