Loose Source Routing

I am reading about IPv6 and came across loose source routing. When I saw
that this is also a feature in IPv4, I got to thinking about why and when
this would be used. Does it have a practical application?
 
The only thing that I could see it used for is to prevent asynchronous
routing. Any thoughts?
