I don't think it's about getting slammed! I think it's more about us all
trying to mull it over. :)
While the link-local addresses are required, it always seemed to me that
logically the router would send out packets that it generated using this
address by default (which it does) because it was the first availble address
in its table. So that's how (IMHO) it got in there to begin with...
I never really questioned or saw a problem with it, since we have similar
things already. The OSPF database uses the Router-ID as the advertising
information. That's not always a directly reachable thing (hell, it's not
even always a real Ip address!). It's just a reference. Each router will
look for next-hop from there.
*shrug* My opinion/interpretation.

Why not I'll bite... :-) From what I've read and understand... The
link-local address is used for local connectivity in the IPv6 world and
reference the local physical connection between 2 routers. From what I
remember the link-local address is used for local communication on that link
and is not routeable beyond it's local segment. With that said I'm going to
go out on a limb and say it's needed for next-hop resolution between two
routers...
I was also under the impression when configuring RIPng over FR that you only
need a frame-relay map pointing to "link-local" address at the other not a
site-local or a global address...
Ok, /me waiting to get slammed... ;-)
