I am not 100 percent sure, but I believe that before the October 2004
change, passing the CCIE Written Exam to recertify your existing CCIE,
or passing the Lab and achieving the CCIE, would renew your CCNP, but
passing the CCIE written by itself would not renew the CCNP.
So the change is that passing the CCIE written by itself will renew your
CCNP. This provides quite an incentive to move along and pursue the CCIE.
I could be wrong, but that is my impression of how things were.
