Actually, it's a preference level, not a priority level. (Slight typo
earlier )

From the RFC:

"...A Router Advertisement includes a "preference level" for each
advertised router address. When a host must choose a default router
address (i.e., when, for a particular destination, the host has not

been redirected or configured to use a specific router address), it
is expected to choose from those router addresses that have the
highest preference level (see Section 3.3.1 in the Host Requirements
-- Communication Layers RFC [1]). A network administrator can
configure router address preference levels to encourage or discourage
the use of particular routers as default routers...."

From a router:

r5(config)#int eth0/0
r5(config-if)#ip irdp
r5(config-if)#ip irdp address 10.1.1.1 1

r5#show ip irdp
Ethernet0/0 has router discovery enabled

Advertisements will occur between every 450 and 600 seconds.
Advertisements are sent with broadcasts.
Advertisements are valid for 1800 seconds.
Default preference will be 0.
Proxy for 10.1.1.1 with preference 1.
BRI0/0 has router discovery disabled

(In this case, 10.1.1.1 would be the virtual address being advertised. )

Hi Marvin,

You mentioned that "IRDP can be used in conjunction with VRRP, and can
advertise the IP address of the virtual address, by setting a priority
value."

Could you provide an example or a link and shows how IRDP can advertise the
virtual address configured with VRRP?

Thanks,

PD

VRRP is very similar to HSRP, in that you have an elected virtual router
that forwards packets sent to a virtual IP address.

With DHCP, you have the option of specifying multiple gateways, but it is up
to the end hosts to determine whether a gateway has failed, and to switch to
using the next gateway.

IRDP announces a gateway. By itself, it is not recommended for failure
detection, due to the spacing between advertisements. IRDP can be used in
conjunction with VRRP, and can advertise the IP address of the virtual
address, by setting a priority value.

GLBP is similar to VRRP and HSRP, but multiple routers are active and the
packet forwarding is balanced.

Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding gateway redundency. If R1 & R3 are connected by
ethernet link(vlan 10) and R3 is the dhcp server. We have to make R1 as a
primary link and R1 as gateway when only primary fails(Restriction:Not to
use hsrp feature)

R1-----VLAN 10 USERS--------R3(DHCP SERVER)

If a question does not ask to track and interfaces and not telling any thing
about irdp asware status of clients. What feature can be used(vrrp or
irdp). Any help is appreciated with good example.

PS:what is the difference between vrrp and irdp and under what circumstenses
we use these features.

thanks

Mani
