Hi,
I've had to return to a topic which I thought I knew, but which I've
become confused about. I'm no ATM expert and my access to ATM
equipment is limited so I'm hoping someone can help me gain some
understanding on this topic. I have the following questions:
1. I think there are 4 possible ways to configure PPP over ATM.
Under the assigned PVC:
A. Protocol ppp virtual-template 1
B. Protocol ppp dialer & dialer pool-member
C. encapsulation aal5ciscoPPP virtual-template 1
D. encapsulation aal5autoppp virtual-template 1
Are there any others?
2. For any of the above do you need to specify encapsulation ppp under
the virtual-template? I think its the default but most examples show
it configured. It would need to be added to the dialer interface,
correct?
3. Are A and B locally significant only? In other words, can you
configure either when configuring PPP over ATM, and both should work
regardless of the other end. I don't think the other end should care
whether a virtual-template or a dialer interface are configured but
I'd like to check.
4. If you're asked to configure PPP over ATM, I would assume that you
are required to do either A or B above, as aal5ciscoPPP is a Cisco
variation. Dangerous assumption?
5. I have labbed all of the above apart from 4 up with no difficulty.
However, in the lab one end would already be configured. Apart from
using ilmi-pvc-discovery to find out the PVC and encapsulation
information, are there any other useful debug commands.
6. I haven't seen any examples of aal5autoppp and when you would use
it. Can someone explain it and when you would use it? Is is applicable
to the R & S exam?
Are there any other possible variations I should be aware of for the
lab? Any other tips or potential pitfalls?
Thanks
Roy
