Hi Ken,
Not entirely correct. Sparse dense mode was initially created so that
auto-rp would work, effectively it mean that 224.0.1.40 and 39 would be
treated as dense so that pim routers could find their RP.
With the release of Autorp Listener this allowed pim sparse routers to find
the RP

Guys,
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you had to use sparse-dense mode for
autorp. The mapping agent uses dense-mode with the IPs of 224.0.1.39 and
224.0.1.40 in order to communicate with the RPs. After that RPs are
discovered and recognized sparse mode is used to route traffic.

Tim,
My understanding is when you use autorp listener command in
combination with sparse-mode then dense-mode is completely disabled.
If there's no RP for certain multicast groups then the traffic is
gettting nowhere.
