Balaji,
It seems to me that the access vlan and the native vlan may be different.
Setting the access vlan, as below, does not change the native vlan from the
default vlan 1. If this port stops trunking, it will be in access vlan 10.
While it trunks vlan 10 will be tagged.
interface FastEthernet0/8
switchport access vlan 10
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
CAT1#sh int f0/8 trunk
Port Mode Encapsulation Status Native vlan
Fa0/8 on 802.1q trunking 1
Port Vlans allowed on trunk
Fa0/8 1-4094
Port Vlans allowed and active in management domain
Fa0/8 1,10,100
Port Vlans in spanning tree forwarding state and not pruned
Fa0/8 1,10,100

It would be native vlan of the trunk port (in the case dot1q) . so it
