Stuart,

Absolutely, two routers configured with frame relay switching can indeed be
backed together.

On the link between the two routers all you need to do is have one side DCE
and the other DTE as normal and simply map the outgoing pvc's to an incoming
on the other and connect those to the 'cpe' routers.

Take an example where two 4 port serial routers are connected together on
serial 4 on each router:

A pvc facing Router A on Frame-Switch A (Serial2) is DLCI 16
- on Frame-Switch A 'connect' serial 2/dlci 16 to serial 4/dlci 16
- on Frame-Switch B 'connect' serial 4/dlci 16 to Serial 1/dlci 21
A pvc facing Router B on Frame-Switch B (serial 1) is DLCI 21

Important thing to note is that the dlci's on the links between the devices
must of course be the same on each side of the link.

I've used this configuration before and believe it or not but I even know
one tier 2 Telco who uses this configuration type using enhanced frame
switching in I think 12.0.7T to provide low cost/low density frame services
for clients in small pop's.

Subject: Using 2 Routers as a combined Frame-Relay Switch

Hi All,

I'm just about to start working through the Internetwork Experts labs but
the frame-relay switch requires 6 serial interfaces, I only have 2 routers
with 4 serial interfaces. Is there a way I could connect the two routers
back-to-back and configure them both as frame switches, the link between
them would then switch the relevant dlci's from one router to the other?

Any other way I could do this?

Thanks,
Stuart.
