Simple question:
why is it that in a bridged environment a local serial interface on the router doesnt get added to the ARP table? It gets in the ARP table of the remote router using E0s address.. !!!!!!
Bridged network
30.0.4.0/24 Network
E0-(.4)--R4S1/2(.1)---------------S1/2(.2)--R3(.3)-E0
I can ping across the bridged network, from R4 to R3,the remote side, can ping .3-.2 and local E0(.4) but I cannot ping my local serial = interface from neither R4 nor R3.
R4#ping 30.0.4.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 30.0.4.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
3d00h: IP ARP: creating incomplete entry for IP address: 30.0.4.1 interface Eth
rnet0/0
3d00h: IP ARP: sent req src 30.0.4.4 0007.eb7f.0180,
dst 30.0.4.1 0000.0000.0000 Ethernet0/0
3d00h: IP ARP: sent req src 30.0.4.1 0007.eb7f.0180,
dst 30.0.4.1 0000.0000.0000 Serial1/2
3d00h: IP ARP throttled out the ARP Request for 30.0.4.1.
R4#sh arp ( 30.0.4.1 is NOT IN THE ARP table, therefore I cannot ping it)
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
Internet 30.0.4.2 48 0007.eb7f.0020 ARPA Serial1/2
Internet 30.0.4.3 48 0007.eb7f.0020 ARPA Serial1/2
Internet 30.0.4.4 - 0007.eb7f.0180 ARPA Ethernet0/0
R4#
R4#ping 30.0.4.3
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 30.0.4.3, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 32/34/36 ms
R4#
Everything in the ARP table is pingable, I tried to add a static ARP in R4s ARP table using R4s E0 mac address. Doesnt work.
I noticed S1/2 of R3 gets added to R4's ARP table using the R4'E0 MAC.
Any ideas, why the router doesnt put its serial interface in the routing table? Does it have to use the E0's MAC for this? It cannot map 2 MACs to the same IP....!
When I do a show interface S1/2 I dont see a MAC for the serial link.....
I tried to bridge over PPP with the same results. Any ideas?
Thank you
