RE: DISTANCE command

Hi Pat,

I discovered the hard way that fully understanding this command and its many
forms is far from trivial.

But, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1) This command is only locally significant and therefore only affects
routes learned by this router from other routers.

2) This command typically has 2 forms for each protocol. One form - I call
this the wholesale form - acts upon a whole class of routes and doesn't take
an acl as a parameter. For example, with bgp, you can use this command to
change the distance of all internal routes or external routes. The other
form of this command takes an acl as a parameter to specify which routes
this command affects - I call this the retail form of the command.

3) Some forms of the retail form of the distance command require the router
id of the neighbor from which you're learning routes as the ip address you
enter - I think this is true for ospf, isis, and eigrp, but I'm not 100%
sure. Other times you need to use the actual ip address of the neighbor
from which you're learning the routes - I think this is true for rip and bgp
but again I'm not 100% sure.

4) After using this command, it's a good idea to refresh your table with
clear ip route *

5) This command is only used when a router is learning the same route(s)
from multiple protocols and you need to this router to prefer the path
learned via one protocol over another protocol when that preference is
non-default. For example, by default, a cisco router will prefer the paths
learned via ospf over the paths learned via rip.

HTH, Tim
