do a debug ppp authentication,

in the debug output on the side where you are using this, you should see
something like "waiting for peer to authenticate first"

I'm surprised to see it's not showing up in the show runn, did samething
happen when you use a physical interface rather than a dialer...

Well, here goes:
r5(config-if)#ppp chap wa
r5(config-if)#ppp chap wait
r5(config-if)#do r int dialer 1
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 329 bytes
!
interface Dialer1
 ip address 149.1.45.5 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer pool 1
 dialer string 5272014
 dialer-group 1
 no cdp enable
 ppp authentication chap
 ppp chap hostname r5
 ppp chap password 0 CISCO
 ppp multilink
 ppp multilink fragment delay 10
 ppp multilink links minimum 2
 ppp multilink interleave
end

But, I'm interested in knowing how to see the effect in the output of the
debugs. What should I look for so I can see this?

TIA, Tim
