First, you are making this much more complicated than necessary. The Dot1q
Tunneling is terminated at the Service Provider meaning all the extra
headers that the tunneling adds is removed before being sent to you.
Second, if you are actually doing the tunneling on your switch the
documantation on dot1q on any platform that supports dot1q tunneling does
not mention tweaking the vlan mtu, only the system mtu. third, in most
cases the system mtu does not even have to be tweaked.
